Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is viewed as a decision-making and implementation process that guides all of our activities. These include the protection and promotion of human rights, socio-economic contributions, health and safety, environmental performance and compliance with legal requirements. CSR involves a commitment to contribute to the economic, environmental and social sustainability of communities through the ongoing engagement of stakeholders, the active participation of communities impacted by our activities and the public reporting of policies and performance in the economic, environmental and social arenas.

Strathcona Industrial Association (SIA)

AltaSteel is a member of the Strathcona Industrial Association (SIA), a voluntary business organization that was formed in 1974 and works with communities and government agencies to promote a safe and healthy working and living environment in and around areas where member companies operate. As part of the SIA mandate, members operate an ambient air monitoring network, ensure emergency preparedness and land planning, and increase awareness of the industry in the community through a number of community awareness programs, including emergency response procedures. Visit the SIA website.

Certification Standards

AltaSteel is ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 certified.  In order to maintain certification and meet and/or exceed standards, AltaSteel undergoes annual audits to ensure that policies, procedures, and processes are maintained.

Community Contributions

United Way

AltaSteel’s major contribution to the community is through the United Way. AltaSteel and the USW Local 5220 jointly conduct our annual United Way fund raising activities. The United Way is a non-profit charity whose activities focus on improving the long-term health of communities.

Annual Food Drives

Since 2007, AltaSteel and the USW Local 5220 have also run annual food drives. Each year we have raised over 1 ton of food which is donated to local food banks in Edmonton and Sherwood Park. The local food banks in turn, provide food to agencies, churches, and food depots that provide food services to people in need.  These food services can be in the form of food hampers, meals, and/or snacks.

Canadian Blood Services Partnership

AltaSteel is also a Partner for Life with the Canadian Blood Services. AltaSteel has many employees who are dedicated to donating blood on a regular basis and all employees are encouraged to participate.

Annual Corporate Challenge

AltaSteel is an active participant in Edmonton ’s annual Corporate Challenge. The Corporate Challenge promotes health and wellness within organizations.  AltaSteel has over 100 participants from its current employee’s as well as retired employees.
