Manager, Steelmaking Maintenance
The Manager, Steelmaking Maintenance is responsible for the overall leadership, performance, and reliability of mechanical and electrical maintenance within the steelmaking operations. This role ensures safe, efficient, and cost-effective maintenance execution to support production targets, equipment reliability, and operational excellence.
The role provides strategic and day-to-day leadership to maintenance teams, ensuring effective planning, scheduling, and execution of all maintenance activities, including preventative, predictive, and corrective work. The Manager is accountable for minimizing downtime, optimizing asset performance, and driving continuous improvement across the steelmaking area.
Responsibilities
- Lead all mechanical and electrical maintenance activities within steelmaking, ensuring alignment with safety, production, and reliability objectives
- Establish and enforce maintenance standards, procedures, and best practices to ensure consistent and high-quality execution
- Provide leadership, direction, and performance management to maintenance supervisors, planners, engineers, and trades personnel
- Ensure effective planning and scheduling of maintenance work, including prioritization of backlog based on risk, safety, and operational impact
- Oversee preventative and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and extend asset life
- Coordinate closely with operations to plan and execute maintenance activities with minimal disruption to production
- Lead and support major shutdowns and outages, including scope development, resource planning, and execution oversight
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to maintenance, including downtime, reliability, costs, and schedule compliance
- Identify and drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing unplanned downtime and improving maintenance efficiency
- Ensure effective use and optimization of the CMMS for work management, reporting, and data-driven decision-making
- Collaborate with procurement and stores to ensure availability of critical spares and effective inventory management
- Develop and manage the maintenance budget, including labour, materials, and contracted services, ensuring cost control and accountability
- Support capital projects and equipment upgrades by providing maintenance input on design, maintainability, and lifecycle considerations
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and applicable standards, reinforcing a strong safety culture
- Lead incident investigations related to maintenance activities and ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained
Qualifications and Experience
- Related education including but not limited to a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), an Engineering degree or a Certified Journeyperson Millwright or Electrician
- A Certified Reliability Maintenance Professional (CRMP) or Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) certification would be considered an asset.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience leading a maintenance department in a manufacturing environment
- Experience in leading within a unionized environment is necessary to be successful in this role
- Experience with overhead cranes is an asset
- Experience in reliability and root cause analysis would be beneficial
- Strong Microsoft Office skills
- Strong time management skills, ability to plan appropriately, handle multiple tasks efficiently and work well under pressure
- Strong work ethics, high level of enthusiasm and ability to excel in a flexible, fast-paced environment

- Days and hours of work are 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday, flexibility is required to accommodate for plant demand during shutdown, breakdowns, etc.
