AltaSteel is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our Finance team in Edmonton, Alberta. Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Finance, this position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, supporting audits, and driving continuous improvement across accounting processes.
The Senior Accountant provides leadership and oversight of core accounting functions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management. Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and oversee accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
- Lead and support month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial analysis.
- Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable processes, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and timely resolution of issues.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity.
- Coordinate and support internal and external audits, including preparation of supporting documentation and resolution of audit inquiries.
- Partner with operational leaders and cross-functional stakeholders to develop budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
- Perform variance analysis and provide actionable insights to support business decision-making.
- Support cash flow forecasting, working capital management, and treasury-related activities.
- Assist with tax compliance activities, remittances, and financial regulatory requirements.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance financial reporting, operational efficiency, and internal controls.
- Leverage financial systems and reporting tools to improve reporting capabilities and streamline processes.
- Collaborate with departments including Operations, Procurement, and Human Resources to support organizational objectives.
- Stay current on changes in accounting standards, financial regulations, and reporting requirements.
Qualifications and Skills:
- CPA designation required.
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and audit processes.
- Experience supporting month-end and year-end close activities.
- Previous experience with ERP systems; Dynamics 365 experience is considered an asset.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
