Senior Product Development Engineer

In 2012, my wife and I decided to make the move from Toronto to Edmonton.  She had just finished her medical residency and had received an interview for a full-time (Doctor) position at a hospital in Edmonton to start her work career.  She interviewed, loved the staff and hospital. When Edmonton started becoming a real possibility for us, I in turn, started to look for work and found a posting for a Product Metallurgist position at a local steel company in town: AltaSteel.  The rest as they say is history.  Having 13 years’ experience in both captive and commercial heat treat and holding positions that have included: Quality Manager roles, Chief Metallurgist, Process Engineering Manager and technical sales positions – moving to a steel company was definitely outside the comfort zone that I had carved out for myself at the time.

I started with AltaSteel in 2012, I have enjoyed my time and I have had the opportunity to learn new things. I started as Product Metallurgist, became Superintendent of Product Development and am now the Senior Product Development Engineer.  Working on continuous improvements on existing product lines, working side by side with our customers on existing products and solutions and in new product development – the job is challenging but very rewarding at the same time.  Diversity in work tasks is something I enjoy and my position has certainly offered that. 

 

I have been very fortunate in my current role to do some traveling which has included visits to existing and new customer sites, as well as being a regular attendee and contributor at +MAS which has been in a number of places throughout the world: (Arequipa, Peru.  La Serena, Chile, Paracas, Peru, Newcastle, Australia, Guadalajara, Mexico, Kamloops, BC, Kansas City, USA). Interacting with customers, working on building relationships with them and being a reliable, dependable quality partner and supplier is something I have strived for in my position and something I hold in high regard as fundamental in building and sustaining long-term relationships and repeat business.  AltaSteel has presented me with a tremendous opportunity and if you enjoy an exciting, challenging and rewarding environment then it’s a place I recommend to you.
